At Brettenham, we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. A broad and balanced physical education curriculum is intended to provide for pupils increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations. Progressive learning objectives, combined with sympathetic and varied teaching approaches, provide stimulating, enjoyable, satisfying and appropriately challenging learning experiences for all pupils. The selection of suitably differentiated and logically developed tasks, will help pupils, irrespective of their innate ability, enjoy success and be motivated to further develop their individual potential and take part in lifelong physical activity.
Reception: Manipulative skill
The children will focus on the ability to work with equipment and small apparatuses to co-ordinate movements.
Year 1: Developing hand eye co-ordination.
This term children will develop their skills in balance and co-ordination when using a racket or bat. They learn to grip a bat and use it to balance, control and send a beanbag and ball in different ways. They learn to connect the bat and practise striking along the floor and drop feed. they aim for targets and strike for distance. They are encouraged to apply thier skill in variety of activities and games. this unit support skills in net games such as tennis, in striking and fielding games such as rounders or cricket and in invasion games such as hockey.
Year 2: Striking skills
In this term children improve and apply their basic skills. in particular they focus on different ways of striking the ball and feeding the ball. They work on hand-eye co-ordination using different types of bat and ball. They play games based on striking and fielding games (like rounders and cricket)and develop net games skills (like tennis and badminton). They have the opportunity to play one against one, one against two, one against three. They play games that demand simple choices and decisions on how to use spaces to avoid oppenents, where to send the ball and score points. In all games activities, children think about how to use skills, strategies and tactics to out wit the opposition.
KS2: Net and wall games
The focus for this term is on tennis but can be adapated to deliver other net and wall games such as badminton, volleyball and table tennis. Children will think about to use skills, stratgies and tatics to outwit the opposition. Throughout the unit, pupils should be encouraged to make more decisions and choices when playing games whicj involve partner and group work. in netgames, players achieve this by sending a ball (or other implement) towards a court or target area which their oppenents is defending. The aim is to get the ball to land in the target area and make it difficult for opponent to return it.

Sports personality of the year 2023
Congratulations to all the nominees this year and the winner is.........
Ijaz is a worthy winner. He displays not only the physical qualities we look for but also his thinking. He is able to problem-solve when faced with tactical and compositional problems and shares these ideas with the people he is working with. He does this in such an articulate way that everyone he works with excels in PE.
Not only has he got a brilliant mind, he is socially so gentle, kind and supportive to all the children he works with. He makes them feel at ease, which allows them to take risks when working with him without the worry of making mistakes. This is something that I have seen Ijaz develop over the last couple of years as his confidence in PE has grown.
Lastly, this young man epitomises the word standards, he sets the bar so high for himself in any challenge he faces. This is a trait that will carry him through school and on to great things.
Congratulations Ijaz, you are the 2023 Sports Personality of the year!
