At Brettenham, safeguarding is the foundation of everything we do. We are committed to creating a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment where every child feels valued, protected and able to flourish. We believe that safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and that children learn best when they feel secure, happy and supported.
Our Safeguarding Pillars

1. Safe and Supportive Relationships
Positive relationships are at the heart of our school. We ensure every child is known, cared for and has trusted adults they can turn to when they need help or support.

2. Prevention and Education
Through our curriculum, assemblies and daily interactions, we teach children how to keep themselves safe, look after their wellbeing, build healthy relationships and navigate both the online and offline world confidently.

3. Early Identification and Intervention
We are vigilant in recognising when children may need additional support. Concerns are acted upon promptly, and we work proactively to ensure children and families receive the help they need at the earliest opportunity.

4. Skilled and Accountable Adults
All staff, governors and volunteers receive regular safeguarding training and understand their responsibility to protect children. Clear systems and strong leadership ensure that safeguarding remains a priority across all aspects of school life.

5. Partnership with Families and Agencies
Effective safeguarding is built on collaboration. We work closely with parents, carers and external agencies to provide coordinated support and achieve the best outcomes for every child.

Creating a Strong Safeguarding Culture

We create a culture of safeguarding through visible leadership, high-quality training and an unwavering commitment to pupil wellbeing. Children's voices are listened to and valued, staff feel confident to raise concerns, and safeguarding is woven into everyday practice. By fostering trust, openness and a shared sense of responsibility, we create a school community where every child feels safe, respected and ready to learn.

How to Report a Safeguarding Concern

If you are worried that a child is at risk of harm, abuse, or neglect, you can report your concern in the following ways:

If something is upsetting you, making you feel unsafe, or you’re worried about a friend, you can talk to any adult in school. You can also get help from:

Visitors to Brettenham

To ensure that visitors are well-informed and aware of their responsibilities in regard to safeguarding, the school provides information that outlines safety protocols and guidelines.

Operation Encompass

Operation Encompass is a project that runs jointly between schools and the Metropolitan Police Service. 

Operation Encompass is the notification to schools that a child (under 18) has been exposed to, or involved in, any domestic incident. This will ordinarily be done by the start of the next school day. They will ensure that a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), is informed.

The DSL can then use the information that has been shared, in confidence, to ensure the wellbeing of the child. We may then be able to make provisions or adjustments to assist the child and their family.

We are keen to offer the best support possible to all our pupils and we believe this will be extremely beneficial for all those involved.
