Consulting on the RSHE policy

Schools are expected to consult parents when developing their RHE policy. This typically focuses on the policy as a whole, rather than on individual lessons or resources.

At Brettenham this included explaining:

• The purpose and scope of RHE.
• The definitions of Relationships Education, Health Education and any Sex education.
• How sensitive topics are handled.
• How the school works with parents, including how the right to withdraw from Sex education is managed.

WE used parent surveys, draft policy reviews and information meetings to discuss the statutory guidance and RHE policy. We considered parental feedback, while retaining responsibility for the final curriculum offer.

Consulting on non-statutory Sex education

At Brettenham we have chosen not to provide Sex education beyond the statutory Science curriculum.

What happens after consultation?

Following the consultation, we:

Reviewed feedback and identified any themes or concerns.

Decided whether changes to the RHE policy or approach are needed.

Published the updated RHE policy and made it accessible on the school’s website.

Consultation does not give parents the right to approve, veto or redesign curriculum content. The statutory guidance is clear that decisions about what is taught and how remain the responsibility of the school.V
