Spring - Our creative curriculum topic this term is Ancient Egypt
Protected from invaders by deserts, and fed by fertile farmland on the banks of the Nile, the Egyptian civilization survived for thousands of years with few major changes. The Ancient Egyptians left behind many clues about their way of life, from giant temples and pyramids to statues, paintings, mummies, and picture writing called hieroglyphics
SMSC
Ultimate Question- What is important to me?
Values - Value
In SMSC we have been learning about important religious figures from Islam, Sikhism and Judaism. We have shared our experiences and begun to understand what is important to us and what we value in our lives.
Autumn - Our creative curriculum topic this term is the Anglo Saxons
The Anglo-Saxons were a group of farmer-warriors who lived in Britain thousands of years ago. Made up of three tribes who came over from Europe, they were called the Angle, Saxon, and Jute tribes. The two largest were the Angle and Saxon, which is how we've come to know them as the Anglo-Saxons today.
Waste Warriors
Year 4 will be participating in a special project for the first five weeks of the term. The project will help us learn how to be 'Waste Warriors' and the damage single use plastic is doing to our environment. We will learn how to recycle properly, upcycle materials found in our homes and the importance of reducing the amount of single use plastic and waste products we use.
Ultimate Question - Where am I going?
Value - Destiny
We will be learning about religion and from religion to tackle some important questions this year. Our first question is, 'Where am I going?' Our focus religions will include Islam, Judaism and Sikhism.
Science
We are learning about changes of state. We have already carried out investigations about the temperature of liquids and more recently made ice-cream. We followed the method below.
Method
1) Pour cream into the small bag.
2) Add sugar and vanilla.
3) Zip the bag getting out as much air as you can.
4) Add ice to the big bag, enough to cover the small bag.
5) Add in 60 grams of salt to the bag.
6) Put the small bag into the big bag and massage the bag for 5 to 10 min
Try it at home with your children!
Black History Day
The focus at Brettenham this year was on the ‘Bold women in Black history’ book from the Little Leaders series. Year 4 looked at the poetry and life of Maya Angelou. Below is some poetry written by 4S inspired by her work.
Racism by Stefan
We fight against racism,
It's always in the streets,
It's always in the newspapers,
Racism is everywhere,
However, still we rise.
We learn about it at school,
We know that it is wrong,
It's hatefulness and hurtfulness,
We have to fight it,
Because, still we rise.

Living In The Wider World
This term we will focus on what it means to live and go to school in a diverse community and what our rights and responsibilities are.
