Mathematics

Intent

At Brettenham Primary School, our intent is to provide children with a high-quality mathematics education which not only ensures children are competent mathematicians, but also ensures that they are highly enthusiastic about the subject and have a curiosity to learn more.

We know that making links is key to lasting knowledge. Therefore, we have carefully constructed our curriculum by focusing on building upon previous learning before introducing new content.

All staff at Brettenham are committed to improving Numeracy outcomes for children by focusing heavily on the concrete, pictorial, abstract (CPA) approach. We encourage lessons which involve introducing abstract concepts in a more familiar and tangible way.

We follow the National Curriculum for the teaching of mathematics by ensuring our lessons focus on the key aspects of:

  • Fluency
  • Reasoning
  • Problem solving

A large percentage of children at Brettenham are registered as having English as an additional language, therefore we place a heavy emphasis on vocabulary teaching so that children are able to explain and justify their answers mathematically.

Our mathematics curriculum builds on prior learning with progression throughout the school:

Yearly plans follow the National Curriculum and progression map, breaking down the strands into explicit skills to teach. Teachers follow our school's Yearly Plans when creating their lessons to ensure progression and consistency across the school. Please click the year group below to view their progression map.

 Mental Maths Challenges

Every week, children complete a Mental Maths Challenge, competing to see which class can get the highest score and take the trophy back to their class for the week! These challenges include a range of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division arithmetic sums. This is vital for our children, as efficient mental strategies are foundations for learning other mathematical techniques.

In KS1, Mental Maths Challenges encourage children to move towards instant recall rather than relying on using their fingers to solve sums. As children progress into KS2, these challenges move on to converting between fractions, decimals and percentages and converting measures.
